Environmental Metrics & Conservation Data Analysis
Background
Effective land conservation requires reliable data to understand environmental conditions and measure the impact of preservation efforts. Allegheny Land Trust (ALT) aims to strengthen its ability to analyze environmental trends and track conservation outcomes through improved data collection and reporting practices. However, determining which environmental metrics provide the most meaningful insights can be challenging without a structured evaluation of available data sources and best practices.
To support this effort, our team worked with ALT to analyze existing environmental datasets and research studies relevant to the Pittsburgh and Allegheny County region. The goal of this project was to identify key environmental indicators and recommend a framework for data collection that would support ALT’s long-term conservation strategy and reporting needs.
Project Details
Our project focused on two primary workstreams: analyzing existing environmental data and recommending improved data collection practices for ALT.
Workstream 1: Environmental Metric Analysis
- Reviewed and synthesized findings from external datasets and research reports related to environmental conditions in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, including studies from organizations such as We Conserve PA.
- Identified key environmental indicators relevant to land conservation, ecosystem health, and regional environmental trends.
- Explored relationships between environmental variables to uncover insights relevant to ALT’s conservation priorities.
- Translated findings into accessible data visualizations and summary reports designed for use by ALT staff and stakeholders.
Workstream 2: Data Metric Design Recommendations
- Evaluated environmental data collection practices used by state, city, and national conservation organizations.
- Identified best practices for environmental metric tracking and reporting.
- Developed recommendations tailored to ALT’s current data infrastructure and operational capabilities.
- Proposed a framework for future data collection to support consistent analysis, impact measurement, and reporting.
Deliverables
-
Environmental Metric Analysis & Compilation
A comprehensive report summarizing key environmental indicators for Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, including visualizations and analysis of relevant datasets. -
Data Metric Design Recommendations
A strategic recommendation document outlining proposed environmental metrics and data collection practices that ALT can adopt for future conservation analysis and reporting. -
Final Presentation
An executive presentation summarizing key findings and recommendations delivered to Allegheny Land Trust stakeholders.
Outcomes
This project provided Allegheny Land Trust with a structured overview of environmental data relevant to the region and a clear roadmap for improving its data collection practices. By identifying key environmental metrics and presenting insights through clear visualizations and reports, the project equips ALT with tools to better evaluate environmental conditions, track conservation impact, and support data-driven decision-making in future land protection efforts.
About the Partner
Allegheny Land Trust's mission is helping local people save local land in the Pittsburgh Region. Protecting more than 4,134 acres of green space across 43 municipalities in Allegheny and Washington Counties, ALT works to conserve land that supports the region’s scenic landscapes, biodiversity, and water quality.
